Renee began Throwback Thursday at Its Book Talk as a way to share some of her old favorites as well as sharing books that she wants to read that were published over a year ago. Books that were published over a year ago are almost always easier to find at libraries or at a discounted sale price. As I have been sifting through my TBR list and purging those books that no longer hold my interest, I came across several from years past that I’d love to share with you!
Title: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Average Goodreads Rating: 4.2
“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”
So the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter remembered the chilling events that led her down the turning drive past the beeches, white and naked, to the isolated gray stone manse on the windswept Cornish coast. With a husband she barely knew, the young bride arrived at this immense estate, only to be inexorably drawn into the life of the first Mrs. de Winter, the beautiful Rebecca, dead but never forgotten…her suite of rooms never touched, her clothes ready to be worn, her servant — the sinister Mrs. Danvers — still loyal. And as an eerie presentiment of the evil tightened around her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter began her search for the real fate of Rebecca…for the secrets of Manderley.
When I first read this book I was but a mere teenager and genuinely had no idea it was a classic. To me, it was just a book that pulled me in and entertained me. I read it again a few years ago and I think it spoke to me even more the second time. I can understand why Rebecca is a classic. Beautifully written, carefully crafted story, and a mystery you just can’t get your head around until the end. This is one of my favorite books and one I would happily recommend to anyone.
