Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week they provide a topic and you are free to use that topic and/or variations of that topic to make your top ten list. You don’t have to do all ten. Instead you can do three, five, fifteen, whatever you want. A full list of the weekly themes can be found here.
This week’s theme is a Halloween Freebie! Happy Halloween! Let your creativity run wild with a themed post to celebrate! I must admit, I have never been terribly into Halloween. Sure, as a kid it was fun, but as an adult I must admit it was just fun to hang up a few decorations and light a few autumn themed candle. Now that I have a kiddo to take trick or treating it has certainly taken on a different light. In fact, I just finished sewing her costume. Now, lets see where this Halloween theme takes us, shall we?
The Burning Page (The Invisible Library #3) by Genevieve Cogman
First, I will start with the book I will actively be reading on Halloween. I’m nearly done with it and, honestly, I should have been finished with it two weeks ago. Don’t misunderstand me, it is a great book and part of a great series, my reading mojo is just…drained.
Black Bird of the Gallows by Meg Kassel
Next up is a book on my TBR that promises to be a bit spooky. I like a bit of spooky. Apparently there is also a bit of romance with it which can be either good or bad. I guess we’ll see.
The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates
This book made me sleep with my eyes open when I read it earlier this year. Isn’t that the point of a horror novel? Is it the best horror/thriller I’ve read? Certainly not. But it still filled the bill.
24690 is the darkest, most messed up book I have ever read in my life. On Halloween you except a bit of fright and what is more frightening than the depravity of mankind?
The Complete Works of Edgar Allan Poe by Edgar Allan Poe
Next, let us go to the original King of Horror, Edgar Allan Poe himself. His poems and short stories are like nothing else I have ever read and I would recommend them to most anyone. His poem Lenore is among my favorites.
Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Illustrated Novels by Arthur Conan Doyle
Something that always comes to mind with Halloween is a good mystery. Why not read about the iconic Sherlock deducing his way through some of the most famous fictional cases in history?
Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot #10) by Agatha Christie
Agatha Christie is the best selling author of all time. One of her most well known works is Murder on the Orient Express. This book may not be horror, but you’ll find no finer mysteries than those penned by Christie.
The Unquiet Grave by Sharyn McCrumb
I spent the first decade of my life in the West Virginia Appalachian mountains so it is difficult for me to resist this book about the strange case of the Greenbrier Ghost. Greenbrier is a small West Virginia town but its ghost is renown in American folklore.
The Kept Woman (Will Trent #8) by Karin Slaughter
The words “Queen of Horror” like to be thrown around when Slaughter’s name comes up. I haven’t actually read any of her works but I have to say that I’m interested. This one sounds like it has an interesting plot and what is better on Halloween than reading about murder and mayhem?
Edinburgh Twilight (Ian Hamilton Mysteries #1) by Carole Lawrence
I, for one, love a good mystery. When it is thrown into a fascinating historical setting such at late 1800’s Edinburgh, I’m sold. This is the first book in Lawrence’s mystery series and, according to the reviews, it promises to be gut wrenching and controversial. Right up my alley, especially for Dia de los Muertos.
I started this list vaguely unsure of where it would take me. It appears to have taken me down a reading list of horror and mystery, sure to chill the bones. I, for one, am absolutely pleased with that. What books made your Top Ten list for this Halloween day?
Happy Halloween!!💜

Great list! I was hoping to get to Murder on the Orient Express before today, but that didn’t happen. I’ll just have to continue my Halloween reading into November. Happy reading!

I hope to get to read it soon, myself. I’ve only read one Christie and it was years ago. Looking forward to picking up another one. Happy reading to you, too!

I think all of these might give me nightmares!

They sure aren’t for everyone. I can only read horror novels in small doses or they are completely nightmare inducing.

Despite not being a fan of poetry I do absolutely love Poe. So brilliant.
I’ve only read the first Sherlock story and while I enjoyed it, it was kinda weird. It just suddenly jumped elsewhere partway through.

I’m not the biggest fan of poetry myself but I cannot get enough Poe. He was certainly a disturbed man but his writing was unparalleled.

Isn’t his work wonderful? I have a beautiful anthology of his works that was published in 1909. One of my most prized possessions.
