In a warren of crumbling buildings and desperate people called the Old City, there stands a hospital with cinderblock walls which echo with the screams of the poor souls inside. In the hospital, there is a woman. Her hair, once blonde, hangs in tangles down her back. She doesn’t remember why she’s in such a terrible place-just a tea party long ago, and long ears, and blood… Then, one night, a fire at the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape, tumbling out of the hole that imprisoned her, leaving her free to uncover the truth about what happened to her all those years ago. Only something else has escaped with her. Something dark. Something powerful. And to find the truth, she will have to track this
beast to the very heart of the Old City, where the rabbit waits for his Alice.
“That was the trouble with not being right in the head. You couldn’t always tell if your eyes were telling the truth.”
*TW* This book and my comments on it have mentions of rape *TW*
If any of you had spotted my posts lately, I did nothing but talk about this book since I ordered it. A horror version of Alice after Wonderland? Count me in, I was so on board. Reviews were pretty consistently talking about how nightmarish the story was presented as and I have been very much in the mood for thrills and chills lately so this book seemed beyond perfect.
Unfortunately, I am currently 20% through the book and either the horror and gore aspects come later or they are tame enough to not have the desired affect for me. There are mentions of violence and an attempted rape but it is quickly glossed over. It seems the Jabberwocky is supposed to be our Big Bad but so far he has been a let down, too, as he has just killed people during the daylight because “it is more scary.” Whatever. I’m hoping this picks up because so far it is nothing like what I had hoped for. At this point there has been a lot of fainting and conveniently dropped plot fodder and little else.
