Welcome again to Down the TBR Hole! This meme came from Lost in a Story. All book descriptions taken from Goodreads.
Current TBR Total: 139
It works like this:
- Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
How many times can a description say “cannibal” in one paragraph? Oh, but theres more! Even though you’d think that the cannibal aspect would take up most of the space it seems to focus more on a doomed love story. No thanks. Peace out, cub scout.
Look. I have tried to read this book a half dozen times. I never manage to get more than 50%. This seems like such a beloved book, why can’t I just finish it? Honestly, I would probably remove this from my TBR completely if I didn’t own a copy of it. I don’t buy books frivolously so if I own it I am darn well going to read it. Even if I don’t really want to. I make no sense even to myself.
Let me be straight up with you, I was 100% going to delete this book. My personal policy is that if a book had a lower than 3.5 rating on Goodreads, it gets canned. No questions asked. But I so happened I scroll through some of the reviews and one says only, “Needlessly grotesque and offensive.” Well, now, that sounds like a challenge. I want to know why. That and the Jamestown and Roanoke Colony bits of American history are the only interesting parts.
Reviews for this thing are all over the place. Some people are singing its praises from the stars and writing epic poems on the book’s behalf. Other people are more or less spitting it its general direction. Let me tell you, my curiosity is piqued. Gimme gimme!
This one is absolutely a no brainer. I love Bryant and May. I have yet to read a book in this series that I didn’t adore. The only reason I haven’t read the rest of the series yet is because they never go on sale in the US and full price is more than my pocket can handle, no matter how much I love the series So I sit, and I wait, but some day I shall read all of Bryant and May and I must own them.
Yes, I know, Agatha Christie, one of the most beloved authors in history. I’m still not going to read this book. I got caught in the hype them the movie came out and tacked it to my TBR but this is an easy delete call. I’m never going to read it. Perhaps some day I will watch the film but it is not this day.
New TBR Total: 137
Ouch. Not much progress on the purge front. In fact, I currently have ten more on my TBR than I did the last time I did one of these posts. I’ve stumbled across a lot of books lately that sound good which is weird because my reading slump set in some time in June and it hasn’t let up. C’est la vie.
