This week’s theme is Halloween/Creepy Freebie. I don’t read enough horror to be able to compile a list of my favorite creepy reads, so I thought I would do my favorite book covers with a spooky vibe! Some may be from the horror genre but could be from any genre, as long as the cover has a creepy feel to it.

The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates – I love the cover of this book. It gives the, “Well, obviously this house is haunted,” aura without showing people or knives or things like that. I’ve always taken issue with horror books showing people holding weaponry on the front, feels like a cheap cop out so this one ticks my spooky boxes.

Toil & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women & Witchcraft – This cover has everything you’d expect from a book about witches except for a flying broom. We have the skull, cat, witchy potion, cauldron, spiders web…every cliched item a witch would need. Cliched or not, I still like the cover. The artist made it work.

Into the Drowning Deep (Rolling in the Deep #1) by Mira Grant – Hello to my favorite spooky read this year! I don’t think you need me to tell you about the creepy vibes coming into play here. Blood, limbs reaching in from the darkness…makes me think back to the book again and shiver.

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White – This cover is amazing in its spooky undertones. At a glance you think it could just be a piece of satin that was torn and sewn up. But no, when you add the Frankenstein factor you realize it is in fact an expanse of flesh that has be sewn together with Frankenstein’s name. It is both beautiful and creepy.

The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck – This cover manages to be two things at once, much like the previously mentioned Dark Descent. You have the lovely color scheme of charcoal and gold and the intricate scroll work. But that scroll work is on a skull, luminescent moths within it making it look almost living. Skull are both fascinating and creepy and this one manages to be beautiful as well.

Alice (The Chronicles of Alice #1) by Christina Henry – I am still royally pissed at the dumpster fire this book was, however, that doesn’t detract from the eye catching cover. At first glance you might think, “Oh, of course there is the Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland! I loved the Rabbit!” But then you look closer and see the sinister vibe with the grenade instead of a pocket watch, his one drooping ear hanging at an angle that suggests a violent break, and the hair sticking out at odd angles which leads the viewer to think of something unhinged. I love this cover ever though the book, as I mentioned, is trash.
