It is time once again for that yearly tradition that is the Mid Year Freak Out Tag! Yay! Since I started Literary Weaponry I have loved doing this tag. It is a fun and interesting way to look back at the first part of the year and reflect on the books you’ve read and see what others in the community have been reading as well. It is also fun to see some of the trends that pop up! For instance, this year I’ve noticed many more contemporaries read than I have the past. I’m not much of a contemporary reader myself but I love seeing other readers excitement over these books.
Best Book You’ve Read Yet in 2019
This was a reread for the year but that is okay with me. I absolutely love this book. Actually, when I first read the trilogy Golden Son was my favorite. But now that I’ve reread the first three I have to say that Red Rising is my favorite of those three.
Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2019
I am not going to lie, I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. City of Brass was so wonderful and I just didn’t expect this book to live up to my expectations. I am so very happy to say that I was completely wrong and this is easily the best sequel so far in 2019
New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To
Since this book was announced I have been looking forward to reading it and even own two copies, one the original hardback and the other the OwlCrate edition. Despite that, I haven’t gotten around to picking it up to read yet. Probably will be my next read, though.
Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year
I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this book. It is already preordered and marked on the calendar. The Night Circus is one of my favorite books and I am very much looking forward to seeing what Morgenstern has come up with this time.
I’ve certainly read a couple books this year that have left me disappointed but none so much as Finale. Legendary, the second book of the series, was fantastic so I was looking forward to reading Finale and getting back into the magic and wonder of that world. Instead it was a great big love triangle ship wreck with a dissatisfying end. Still not over it.
I know, this is one of the most read and loved books of 2019, so why was it such a surprise to me that I loved it? I don’t really read contemporary. It is just not my thing. But, I relented to the hype and gave this one a shot a really enjoyed it.
Favourite New Author
When I read A Curse so Dark and Lonely I absolutely fell in love. This book far exceeded my expectations and guaranteed that I would pick up any fantasies from Kemmerer in the future.
Newest Fictional Crush
Eh, I can’t think of one, even looking back at the books I’ve read this year. There have been a lot of great characters but none have really spoke to me that way, you know?
Newest Favourite Character
If you have read this book you may recall Enrique, the brilliant historian with a touch of sass. He was a fun character to encounter and I can’t wait to see more about him in the next book
Book That Made You Cry
Oh for goodness sake, I don’t know. I don’t really read books that illicit that kind of emotional response.
Book That Made You Happy
This book made me happy because not only is it a fantastic story based on the old Arthurian legends except with space and technology, but the rep in this book is amazing. Race, gender, and sexuality are all at play in this book and I felt like they were all well done.
Favourite Book to Film Adaptation
I don’t feel like I can do this one because I haven’t read any books that have been made into film. I mean, I watch Good Omens and loved it but have never read the book so…moving on.
Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year
This book has the most beautiful cover I’ve seen so far this year. It is the size of a cinder block, a brick doesn’t even compare, and the most lovely fiery orange color the whole way around. I haven’t got around to reading it because the size is intimidating but it is sure is lovely.
What Books Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year
These are just a handful of the books I already own and haven’t read yet. Hopefully I get through a few more of them by the end of the year. I also have several preorders being delivered throughout the rest of the year. So many books, so little time.
I have been so blessed with the books I’ve been able to read and purchased/been gifted so far this year and I’m grateful from the tips of my toes to the top of my head.
Here is to a great rest of the year. Happy reading!
