Welcome again to Down the TBR Hole! This meme came from Lost in a Story. All book descriptions taken from Goodreads.
Current TBR Total: 202
It works like this:
- Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
Empire of Gold (The Daevabad Trilogy #3) by S.A. Chakraborty – If you haven’t started reading this trilogy yet then I’m not sure what rock you’ve been hiding under. Perhaps you were shipwrecked on a desert island for a while, hm? Look, this is one of the best series I have ever read. The settings are lush and vibrant, the story is detailed and comes alive on page, and the characters are so vivid it feels as if you can simply turn and have a conversation with any of them. Also worth noting, if you enjoy audiobooks the narrator for this series does a fantastic job.
Seven Blades in Black (The Grave of Empires #1) by Sam Sykes – I’m torn with this book. The story sounds interesting enough, I like a good revenge plot with a badass female with a blade. On the other had, I feel like I’ve read this before and at over 700 pages…well, I’m not a “I like big books and I can not lie” kind of woman. Honestly, I don’t think I’d ever actually read this. It sounds okay, but not enough to spark anything in me.
Gideon the Ninth (The Locked Tomb #1) by Tamsyn Muir – I have actually tried to read this book twice now and stopped after the first chapter both times. Something about the writing style just doesn’t work for me. I like the concept of the book quite a bit so I am reluctant to let it go completely. Not to mention I got one of the first editions with the sprayed black edges and it is hard to just let that molder on the shelf. I’ll give this book one more shot before sending it to a TBR grave.
Shades of Magic Vol 1: The Steel Prince (Shades of Magic Graphic Novels #1-4) by V.E. Schwab – So, I bought this because I loved Schwab’s Shades of Magic book series. Adore it. I bought this on that love of Shades of Magic. Unfortunately I realized that I absolutely do no like comics. Not for me. I would have loved to have enjoyed this and I’m going to keep the copy that I have but I will never read it.
The Near Witch by V.E. Schwab – As I mentioned above, I love Schwab’s Shades of Magic series so when the rerelease of The Near Witch was announced it went straight to my TBR. Since then I’ve had this book in my cart numerous times and then removed it before making the purchase. I just…I genuinely don’t think I’d like it. As much as I enjoy Schwab’s Shades of Magic and her Monster of Verity duology I simply don’t see myself ever reading this.
The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War #2) by R.F. Kuang – KEEP! KEEPKEEPKEEP! Ya’ll, the only reason I haven’t read this yet is because I learned after reading The Poppy War that I need to be in a certain frame of mind to read this series and I just haven’t been. I loved The Poppy War, I know I’ll love The Dragon Republic. However, I need to have any and all sympathy tamped down and my heart strings deadened before I dive into this sucker. I know it will pack a punch.
New TBR Total: 199
I genuinely feel a little bad about deleting Schwab books but I keep telling myself that just because I enjoy some works by an author doesn’t mean that I have to want them all. And that is okay. You can be a fan of an author, you can appreciate an author’s work and effort, without loving everything they release into the world. Just enjoy what you read, set aside what you don’t, and do your best to enjoy this crazy life that you lead.
