Fifteen celebrated authors reclaim classic fairy tales for a new generation:

Hafsah Faizal, “Little Red Riding Hood”
Stacey Lee, “The Little Matchstick Girl”

Meredith Russo, “The Little Mermaid”
Gita Trelease, “Fitcher’s Bird”
and an all-new fairy tale by Melissa Albert

Once upon a time . . .

My thoughts:

Sign. Me. Up. Do you see the names attached to this? I love Hafsah Faizal and Gita Trelease and can’t even begin to imagine how they have decided to reimagine their fairy tales. I, for one, love retellings. Seeing how different authors take an established story or event and shift and mold it into a new creation is fascinating to me. One of the things I most enjoy when reading a retelling is when I notice a direct reference to the original work I like to jot it down and go back and examine it later. I’m actually currently going through another of Adler’s anthologies, His Hideous Heart based on works by Edgar Allan Poe, and comparing the retelling to the original story. Something about that process is just soothing to me. Can’t wait to do it with this collection of stories!
